(HealthDay News) -- Seniors who eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and who have good cognitive function are much less likely to die from heart disease than those who have poorer cognitive function and eat fewer fruits and vegetables, a new study has found.
Cognitive function refers to the ability to think, remember, plan and organize information.
Researchers at the Drexel University School of Public Health in Philadelphia analyzed diet and cognitive data on 4,879 people (3,101 women and 1,778 men), age 70 and older, who took part in the U.S. Longitudinal Study of Aging. The participants were followed for an average of seven years. Read more...

Is Fasting Right for You?
Q: Is Fasting Right for You?
I started fasting once a week, but I had to give it up because I was getting severe headaches. Could you suggest anything I can do to prevent the headaches and continue fasting?
A: You don't say why you want to fast once a week. I have experimented with fasting one day a week as a useful physical and psychological discipline. Many people experience a clearer mental state and increased energy after a short-term fast. When I did my weekly one-day fasts, I consumed nothing but water or herb tea. The first thing I would ask is how much water you were drinking during your fast. You should be drinking at least eight 8- to 12-ounce glasses of water or unsweetened herbal tea. Drinking less than that might explain your headaches. Read more...

Ayurveda to the rescue of cancer patients
Pune : Ten ayurveda practitioners, nutritionists and field assistants in the city have undertaken an ambitious clinical research project for the benefit of cancer patients.
Using traditional medicinal herbs available locally, the project seeks to help cancer patients maintain their overall nutritional health status while minimising the toxicity levels and other side-effects caused by chemotherapy.
While about 10,000 cancer patients, some of whom are terminally ill, will be included from Pune and neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad areas in the efficacy programme, the second phase of the programme would cover similar cases under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. Read more...

Sharing Prescriptions Can Bring Harm, Not Healing
Sharing prescription medication with a family member or friend who needs care may seem like the right thing to do, even an act of kindness. But new research highlights the potential hazards of passing these medicines around.
Of people who borrowed a medicine prescribed for someone else, 25.1 percent experienced some sort of side effect, researchers reported Wednesday at the American Public Health Association annual meeting in Philadelphia. Read more...

Patients More Likely to Die While in ICU in U.S. Than in Eng
(HealthDay News) -- Dying hospital patients in the United States are nearly five times more likely to spend their last days in the intensive care unit than patients in England, finds a new study, and U.S. patients over age 85 are eight times more likely to be in the ICU when they die.
That's the conclusion of Columbia University researchers who compared data from England and from seven states (Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Virginia and Washington).
Of all patients discharged from the hospital, 2.2 percent in England received intensive care, compared to 19.3 percent in the United States, according to the report published in the Nov. 1 issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Read more...
